Canals

The Oxford canal at Napton

The Midland's, is at the centre of England's transport infra structure and this started with the Romans. Two famous roman roads, the Fosse Way and Watling street pass close by and are still very much in use

As the industrial revolution developed, so to did the need for an improved transport infrastructure. The industrialised midlands needed to transport its produce to the markets of London and further abroad. So, in the late 18th century, canals were built to link many of the industrial and mining areas to the markets in the South.

Warwickshire is right at the heart of this network, with many miles of canals and locks. some of the most famous being.

The Birmingham-Stratford

The Warwick and Birmingham

The Oxford

The Grand Union

These canals provide excellent boating holidays, and are well generally well maintained. Narrow Boats can be hired from many places, and if you want a relaxing pleasant way to see the countryside this could be well worth the trip. For the more energetic, the flights of locks at Stockton, Napton, Lapworth and Hatton are well worth a visit. Most canals also have well maintained footpaths and good pubs alongside, so even for an afternoon's walking they are a must!
