| Canterbury Kent Canterbury has been a hugely popular
place to visit ever since it first became an important
place of pilgrimage back in 1170, after the tragic death
of Thomas Becket who was famously murdered in Canterbury’s
great cathedral, by four of King Henry’s knights. This
and the rest of the city’s fascinating history, beauty
and its conveniently close location to London, has made
it a must see site on many a tourist’s itinerary.
The River Stour runs through the heart
of Canterbury making a riverboat tour a relaxing and
rewarding way to see the city. Stunningly beautiful
areas such as the Westgate Gardens and the Dane John
Gardens make the perfect stop off point to enjoy a
leisurely stroll or a pleasant picnic. Also as much of
the city has been pedestrianised getting around on foot
is without the hassle of traffic and its small enough to
be able to cover most of the city in a day quite
comfortably. If you prefer you can opt for an
informative guided tour of the city by a member of the Guild
of Guides,
whose tours leave from the Canterbury Visitor
Information Centre.
Despite the huge amount of bomb damage
to the south of the city during World War Two, much of
the original medieval city remains in the form of
impressive architecture and narrow streets. The Norman
town wall and castle are also of great interest but it
is undoubtedly the cathedral that attracts the attention
of every visitor to Canterbury and sets the tone for the
city.
