| Dudley West Midlands
Situated in the West Midlands, around nine miles to the west of Birmingham city centre, is Dudley, in an area affectionately referred to as the Black Country. This name came about at the time of the industrial revolution when the air was constantly filled with the black coal dust that was both mined locally and then used to smelt iron. Historically this industrial area has a strong association with glass making and crystal ware, both of which are still manufactured locally.
For further insight into Dudley’s history take a tour Dudley Castle and the Black Country Living Museum. Another good idea during the summer months is to enjoy a trip along the canal as the water has played a vital role in Dudley’s industrial heritage. The canal is also responsible for the social waterfront area that is particularly well known for its great nightlife. Talking of nightlife there are several excellent live music venues in the area, playing host to a variety of different artist throughout the year.
Dudley market has also enjoyed a long and prosperous history but today’s shopping trends have lead to the area being dominated by the vast Merry Hill Shopping Centre on Brierley Hill. This area also boasts plenty of other regeneration in the form of many of the area’s best bars and restaurants.
