| Fort William Highlands and Islands
Fort William is the place to be for those
with an appreciation of the great outdoors. The West
Highlands scenery is truly stunning and many of the
activities on offer here include the likes of: walking,
serious hiking trails, trekking, climbing, angling,
canoeing and mountain biking to name but a few. The area
is also a favourite of filmmakers, with the dramatic
scenery making it the perfect location for several
blockbusters that have been made here such as Rob Roy,
Braveheart and Harry Potter.
Of all the sights to see in this neck
of the woods every visitor absolutely must visit Ben
Nevis. It dominates the landscape of Fort William and is
Britain’s highest mountain, standing a majestic 4490ft
tall. Visitors are welcome can attempt to climb the
mountain or test out the gondola style cable car, or
simply take to the waters of the loch below for another
perspective that is every bit as impressive.
The other not to be missed experience
is a ride on board the Jacobite Steam Train. Imagine
yourself on board the Hogwarts Express, yes it was this
journey around the Glenfinnan Viaduct that was used in
one of the Harry Potter films. Even without the movie’s
special effects you’ll see many natural wonders on the
route from Fort William to Mallaig. Nearby Glen Nevis is
another popular spot with ramblers and the glorious
Caledonian Canal is quite stunning. In winter there’s
also the opportunity for a spot of skiing or snowboarding
at the Nevis Range Ski Centre, so whatever time of year
you visit you can be sure you won’t be short of things
to occupy your time.
