| Liverpool Merseyside Situated in Merseyside
on England’s West coast, alongside the Mersey
Estuary, is the city of Liverpool. Most famous for its
love of football and as the home of the Beatles,
Liverpool is a fascinating city with plenty to offer
its visitors from major art galleries and museums, to
fine architecture in the form of two major cathedrals
and the famous Liver Building sporting two Liver Birds
that have become the symbol of Liverpool.
This is an
area that has battled to overcome very serious
economic problems and mass unemployment to thrive once
more. The renaissance that the city if now enjoying is
in a large part down to the sheer tenacity of its
people to turn around the fortune of their city. As an
example of this success Liverpool has recently been
voted European Capital of Culture in 2008, when the
city will host a yearlong programme of events and
festivals. This award is particularly welcome for the
jobs that it will help to generate in the area and
well as extra investment and a rise in visitor
numbers.
Originally the city’s economy
relied on its historic dock area, where in the 18th
century ships would set sail to Africa laden with
goods that would be traded for cotton, sugar and rum
as part of the slave trade movement. It was also the
point from which people sailed of in search of a new
and better life in the New World. All the information
you could want on the city’s history is now profiled
at a number of local museums, most notably the Liverpool
Museum, the Museum of Liverpool Life and
the Merseyside Maritime
Museum. Today though
the Albert Dock area has be totally revitalised
and is now one of the city’s most popular areas to
socialise in.
A good way to get to see the city is
by strolling along the popular Liverpool Heritage
Walk, set out by a series of markers in the pavement
to guide you through some of the areas most famous
landmarks. Alternatively if you want an easier way to
see the sights there are numerous bus tours that you
can opt for, making getting to know the city a breeze.
