| Margate Kent Margate has the proud heritage of being
one of Britain’s first seaside resorts. It’s easy
access from London meant that huge numbers of city
workers during Georgian and Victorian times, as well as
the upper classes, used to escape the smoke in favour of
the fresh air of Margate, with many arriving by boat at
Margate’s pier.
Today’s Margate is less glamorously
associated with Chaz and Dave’s infamous ‘Down a
Margate’ song portraying the area as a bargain
basement British resort that the whole family can
afford. Whilst there is still plenty to attract visitors
to the area it does taking a little bit of searching
past the somewhat tatty seafront.
Margate’s beach however, is still an
impressive stretch of golden sand with donkey rides, a
bouncy castle and boating pool, making this a very
popular place for families with young children. Away
from the water both the Old Town and the Market Place
are worth a look whilst the town centre has all the
shops, pubs and restaurants you would expect. Equally by
night Margate certainly knows how to enjoy itself with
plenty of theatres, bars and nightclubs to choose from.
