Set on the north Cornish coast,
Newquay is one if not the most popular resort in
Cornwall. Thousands of visitors make their way to its
shores each year, drawn by the spectacular beaches
stretching out over some seven miles and offering
outstanding surfing conditions. So what was once just a
small fishing village, has transformed itself into a
world famous surfing venue.
Originally the area started life as a
fortified cliff settlement in the Iron Age. Tin and
china clay provided the locals with a good income, and
trading was made easy thanks to its easily accessible
port. Later, as locals hit upon harder times, smuggling
became a popular pastime. To find out more about Newquay’s
past all you need to do is get a copy of the Newquay
Discover Trail from the local tourism office which will
acts as your guide around the local sites.
With 11 beaches to choose from
visitors soon decide on a favourite, be it a quieter
family orientated beach or one promising the best
surfing conditions. Talking of which, surf schools are
open to all ages making in a great place to learn if
surfing is something you’ve never tried. The hip
surfer crowd have also ensured that there’s a good
selection of lively bars, restaurants and clubs to keep
everyone entertained. That along with the excellent
weather that the area benefits from, makes Newquay one
of the most attractive areas of the UK in which to spend
your summer.
