| Perth Central Scotland Perth has endured a turbulent history, yet
emerged from it all affectionately known as The Fair City. It
is situated at the mouth of the River Tay in southeast
Scotland, and is the county town of Perthshire.
The Roman’s back in AD83 occupied Perth,
however, the basis for the Perth we know to today is more
thanks to King David’s efforts around 1125. It was he who
set out plans for the town and ordered his men to build the
very first bridge over the River Tay forming easier access to
nearby Scone, the ancient capital of Scotland.
Perth went on to be occupied by the English,
before being rescued by Robert the Bruce. It was also the site
of the Battle of the Inch, fought by the Kay and Chattan
Clans. In 1437 King James I was assassinated in the area.
Whilst the outset of the Reformation also started in the area,
when John Knox held his famous rallying sermon.
Over the years Perth became a busy trading
port and several manufacturing industries have thrived here.
These have included the weaving of both wool and linen,
leather goods such as shoes and gloves, dyeing, bleaching, and
of course whisky distilling.
Today the city centre boasts its fair share
of elegant Georgian and Victorian buildings and the
pedestrianised centre makes it very family friendly place.
Also the new river defences put in place in 2001 have made
flooding a thing of the past and created a newly landscaped
riverside for all to enjoy.
