| Sheffield Yorkshire Sheffield is situated in South Yorkshire and boasts a long history dating back to pre-Roman times. However, it is best known for its industrial history associated with steel making and in particular the manufacture of cutlery. In fact cutlery has been made in the area since the Middle Ages, and stainless steel was pioneered in the city.
Today the steel making industry has seen a huge decline, as highlighted in one of the most successful British films of all time The Full Monty, which tells the tale of a group of unemployed Sheffield steelworkers who turn to stripping to make their money. Despite such decline, Sheffield steel cutlery is still produced in the area but the city is now reinventing itself into a thriving modern day city once more.
As part of a huge investment scheme you’ll find many modern art galleries and museums in the area, alongside fantastic shopping opportunities. There’s also an exciting choice of trendy bars and restaurants, many of which are aimed at the young student population.
Further a field Sheffield’s visitors can easily explore the glorious surrounding countryside of the Peak District. There are also some of the country’s finest stately homes such as Chatsworth and Hardwick Hall nearby.
