| Weston super Mare Somerset
Weston-super-Mare first became
really well known in Victorian times when visitors began
arriving from the nearby cities of Bristol and Bath and
further a field, to visit this increasingly popular
seaside resort. The Victorian’s were great believers in
the health benefits of both drinking and bathing in
seawater, hence the seafront soon became lined with
bathing machines enabling bath to climb into the sea and
still preserve their modesty. Further visitors were later
encouraged to the area by the improved transport links
with the long awaited arrival of Brunels Bristol &
Exeter Railway in 1841.
Weston-super-mare’s first
pier, the Birnbeck Pier, was completed in 1867 followed
by much development along the seafront, including the
construction of the sea walls. A second pier, The Grand
Pier, then arrived in 1904, which was the proud winner
of the recent 2001 pier of the year title. The
popularity of the pier today though owes much to its
modern attractions including a big wheel, dodgems and a
ghost train.
Despite the impressive sandy beach at
Weston-super-Mare the resort is let down somewhat by the
water. The area suffers from extremes of tides so for the
majority of the day the tide is so far out that although you
might be on the beach you’re not actually anywhere near
the sea, only mud and clay, earning the area the nickname of
Weston-super-Mud! Despite this Weston-super-Mare has become
a real holiday playground with entertainment for all ages
from golf driving ranges and bowling alleys, to the
fairground rides on the pier. Then there are the theatres,
the cinema and the bingo hall for evening entertainment.
Proud of its bright, brash and boisterous atmosphere
Weston-super-Mare appeals to families after a traditional
and affordable seaside break.
